The Sensei Burt
Memorial Trophy

The Sensei Burt Memorial Trophy

The Sensei Burt Memorial Trophy was reinstated as a trophy in 1996 after lying in a cabinet and gathering dust for some 19 years. The trophy was originally donated and presented by Sensei Graham Burt in 1973 and its inscription reads:

MOST SPIRITED JUDOKA

SENSEI BURT TOURNAMENT

"KYU-SHIN-DO"

The first three winners were:

Since Sensei Burt's untimely death due to a drowning accident on August 4th, 1979, the trophy lay dormant and un-noticed in a cabinet at the YMCA until found in 1996 and reinstated as an award for

The Most Spirited Judoka / NLJA Fall Provincial Tournament.

It was at the old YMCA building that Graham Burt had his dojo and began teaching Judo in Newfoundland over thirty years ago and it is fitting that this trophy was found, resurrected and presented by the new YMCA club:  Astra Judo Club.
